I needed more storage in the kitchen and the top of my fridge was empty because I used the old baskets in my new drawers so I went looking. I didn't like this option, file boxes, but they were so cheap ($5) and so practical (solid, lid) that they won me over. Now I need to make them pretty. And decide what to put in them.
Keep extra stuff in them: napkins, paper towels, meds, trash bags...stuff you buy in bulk but only need in small amounts in your hot space storage.
